Who we are
Why Basilico
Originally from Africa, basil (or basilico as called in Italy) was brought to Italy from Persia by the Greeks, who must have thought highly of it. Basilkos is Greek for “king.” The Romans introduced its therapeutic use in Italy, believing that essence of basilico had healing properties.
It’s difficult to imagine Italian cuisine without il basilico (basil). The name basilico derives from the Greek word basilicòn which means ‘royal’, and in fact it was the Greeks themselves who introduced this most archetypal of Mediterranean herbs into Europe, importing it from its native habitat of India.2 Aug 2009
